When asked why he wouldn’t play Newton in the first of Carolina’s four preseason games, Rivera said: “Just to be careful. I mean this game — there’s not really much to this one. And there are a lot of things we want to see from the young guys. By doing that, we give Kyle an opportunity right off the bat.”

Newton’s play during the preseason will be “limited,” Rivera said. This, the coach added, will also allow the team to decide on the No. 2 quarterback. Allen is listed above rookie Will Grier, a third-round pick, for now on Carolina’s depth chart for the backup role to Newton.
Panthers Ron Rivera and staff being cautious with Luke Kuechly
Minnesota Vikings head coach Ron Rivera says that the team is being cautious with linebacker Luke Kuechly after he came up slow from a pile up during practice on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.

Kuechly said he was hit in the side last week, confirming he was not in the concussion protocol. He jokingly expressed frustration that he has been in “timeout” during live drills at recent practices due to what Rivera has termed “an abundance of caution.”

Newton hasn’t played a down since a loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 17 of last season (Week 15) in a performance that saw him go 16 of 29 passing for only 131 yards and an interception while being sacked four times. In January, the team announced he had undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery — less than two years after he had surgery for a partially torn rotator cuff in the same throwing shoulder.

One of the biggest concerns about Newton’s abilities once he’s healthy is the reliability of arm strength to stretch the field on deep passing routes — historically, one of his major assets.

He has shown through 11 days of training camp that he can still sling the ball deep, but doing so in practice versus doing so against a live rush could have different outcomes. NFL fans will have to wait at least another week, when the the Bills come to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Aug. 16, to see Newton in action.

Newton played in the first three preseason games last year and threw the ball nine times in the 2018 exhibition opener at Buffalo.Rookie running back Jordan Scarlett, who has missed practice since Friday’s Fan Fest in Charlotte, is also out for the Bears game.

Rivera described Scarlett as having a lower-back injury. A fifth-round pick out of Florida, Scarlett is contending to be Christian McCaffrey’s backup.

▪ McCaffrey got a veteran day off Tuesday, Ironically, McCaffrey’s father, Ed, who played 12 NFL seasons as a wide receiver, was in Spartanburg doing some radio work.▪ A big practice Tuesday for tight end Ian Thomas, including a leaping catch in the back of the end zone.

▪ Defensive ends Efe Obada and Marquis Haynes, who each were excused Monday for personal reasons, were back at practice Tuesday.▪ Defensive back Corn Elder picked off Newton in a goal-line drill. That was the second time in as many practices Newton was intercepted in that drill.

I think Bush is a fairly obvious inclusion on any list of things to look for in the very first preseason game. The Steelers took a very unSteelers-like approach to acquiring Bush when they traded three premium draft picks to the Broncos in-order to move up 10 spots in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Can Bush truly be that difference-maker at inside linebacker the defense has lacked since Ryan Shazier was lost with a devastating spinal injury late in the 2017 season? We won’t know that answer by Friday, and you can often read too much into a preseason performance. But let’s just say it wouldn’t hurt the moral of Steelers fans if Bush had a professional football debut on par with that of T.J. Watt, who recorded a couple of quarterback sacks against the Giants two summers ago.

To challenge or not to challenge, that will be the dilemma for head coaches regarding any incomplete pass that does or does not result in a flag for pass interference in 2019. Following some egregious calls and non-calls that may have affected the results of a few very important games a season ago, the NFL decided to give its head coaches the right to challenge any incomplete pass that they feel should or shouldn’t have resulted in a pass interference penalty. Would a coach risk a challenge on such a play, especially early in a game? Coaches will still only have two challenges at their disposal, so it will be interesting to see how aggressive they are with this new rule. What I find really intriguing, however (and, quite frankly, a little alarming), is the prospect of every incomplete pass inside two minutes of each half now being ripe for automatic review. I don’t have to tell you how nerve-wracking that could be for fans, especially those whose favorite team’s defense just came up with a huge stop on fourth down late in the fourth quarter. Yikes. Thanks to some recent buzz, I know who Johnson is, he’s an undrafted guard from Florida. As for how he got to be so tall (6’7” to be exact)? That’s a question perhaps best answered after examining his family tree. I won’t be examining Johnson’s family tree, but I would like to watch him perform against the Buccaneers, especially since, according to the Trib’s Chris Adamski, he’s the only rookie offensive lineman that has gotten consistent second team reps at training camp—and at both guard and tackle. I must admit I’m a big believer in whatever it is the Steelers have been doing with their project-type offensive linemen—Chris Hubbard, B.J. Finney, Alejandro Villanueva, Matt Feiler, etc.—since Mike Munchak began coaching the hogs several years ago. Does Shaun Sarrett, Munchak’s understudy who took over the unit after the latter departed for Denver, have that same magic touch? If he does, maybe he’ll start by doing some great things with Johnson.

Both clubs aim to get back on track in 2019 and will take a step toward that goal when they meet in their exhibition opener on Friday night. Kickoff from Heinz Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Steelers will turn to a young core to help compensate for the departure of two dazzling but polarizing superstars in wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le’Veon Bell. The Buccaneers hired an accomplished and seasoned coach to groom their immensely talented but inconsistent quarterback. Pittsburgh is a 2.5-point favorite and the over-under for total points scored is 37 in the latest Steelers vs. Buccaneers odds. You need to hear what NFL expert R.J. White has to say before you make any Buccaneers vs. Steelers picks or any other 2019 NFL preseason predictions of your own.

White has been SportsLine’s top pro football analyst for two-plus seasons. Over that span, the CBS Sports NFL editor and nationally recognized NFL Draft expert has gone 214-164 on NFL picks against the spread, returning more than $3,200 to $100 bettors.

White was all over the Patriots in the 2019 Super Bowl, nailing the year’s biggest sporting event for the legions that follow him. White said he wouldn’t trust Rams QB Jared Goff in a big spot, and Goff’s bumbling performance was key to New England’s 13-3 win.

The stats guru, whose picks are coveted by fans everywhere, has cashed huge in the world’s most prestigious handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, twice in the past four years. What’s more, White has a combined record of 36-12 (75 percent) on picks involving Tampa Bay or Pittsburgh over the past three seasons. Anyone who has followed him is way up. Now, White has broken down Steelers vs. Bucs from every angle and revealed his strong against-the-spread pick over at SportsLine.

White knows Pittsburgh supporters are eager to see the NFL debuts of two rookies whose training camp performances have drawn rave reviews. First-round pick Devin Bush is a hard-hitting linebacker from Michigan. Bush already has received praise from the coaching staff for his football instincts, and his crushing hits have drawn the awe of onlookers at practice.

Another rookie to watch is receiver Diontae Johnson, a third-round pick from Toledo. He has been lauded for his rapid comprehension of the offense and maturity. He is expected to compete for a key role in the receiving corps alongside second year pro James Washington and veterans Donte Moncrief and Eli Rogers. Amid the departure of Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to emerge as the top receiving target.

Even so, Pittsburgh isn’t assured of covering the Steelers vs. Bucs spread against a Tampa Bay club that similarly hopes to enter a new campaign on a positive note.

The club hired Arians after it parted ways with Dirk Koetter, who was hired in large part to groom and develop quarterback Jameis Winston. The quarterback has shown flashes of progress but also has been plagued by inconsistency. Arians was the architect of an Arizona offense that often ranked toward the top of the NFL in total yardage and points scored. He recently told the media that he has “seen a light go on” for Winston now that the coach and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich have worked extensively with the signal-caller in practice.

The first-year coach also has emphasized the need to improve a running game that ranked No. 29 in the NFL last year. Look for plenty of action from Peyton Barber, who had 871 rushing yards and five scores last year. Ronald Jones looks to bounce back from a disappointing, injury-plagued rookie year in which he gained just 44 yards.

We can tell you White is leaning toward the over, but he’s also identified a critical factor that’s made him jump all over one side of the spread. He’s only sharing that pick over at SportsLine.

Neither the Steelers nor the Bucs will have a full team going into Week 1 of preseason, with both franchises still looking to bring their rosters up to speed.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin revealed starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not feature against Tampa Bay, with Joshua Dobbs starting under center instead.

As ever in preseason, rookies will be the center of attention.

The Cameroon-born French midfielder joined the Carrow Road outfit on a season-long loan from Spanish side Sevilla on Wednesday.

Amadou has only trained once with the side since his arrival but Farke has not completely ruled out the midfielder from their tie with the Reds.

“To be honest, realistically Liverpool will be too soon for him. He just arrived, so he will need a bit of time,” Farke told the club website.

“At least when there’s an emergency, he could be involved. He is on a good level and trained with Sevilla at their training camp.

“Of course he needs to adapt a bit to the new faces and a new coach and club but it’s not a signing that is just available in nine weeks or something like this.

“He is an option but I feel that Liverpool is a bit too early. But if there’s an emergency call, he could be involved.”

Farke believes the addition of the defensive midfielder will provide a good option for his side in their quest to have a successful campaign on their return to the Premier League.

“He’s a good fit to our squad and a good addition pretty late in the transfer window,” he continued.

“We all got the feeling it was the right choice to do it right now and we are all pleased. He adds something special to our squad because he’s a physical player. He’s unbelievably quick, robust and he’s unbelievably strong.

“We have a pretty young and technical side and we felt that it’s good to have this quality, also as an option in our squad.

“He’s an experienced guy and versatile. He has played at the top level in France and played with a big club like Sevilla. It made sense to bring him in and we’re all delighted to have him.”

Amadou has played for French sides Nancy and Lille before teaming up with Sevilla in 2018.
